Ship days

From the Cozumel piers, with the clock running.

Ships tie up at Puerta Maya, the International pier or Punta Langosta downtown, and every one of them wants you back aboard well before it sails. That is a real day ashore, but not an open-ended one. These four are built for it.

  1. 01Official Chankanaab Park Day pass and Snorkel with Lunch includedA short taxi ride south of the piers, and the snorkeling starts at the beach — no boat departure to catch, no way to be left behind.
  2. 02Cozumel Snorkeling Tour: Palancar, Columbia and El Cielo ReefsThe sandbar sits off the island’s southwest tip and the boats run from the marinas near the piers. Half a day on the water, back well ahead of sailing.
  3. 03Mr. Sanchos Beach Club All-Inclusive Day PassOne wristband, a lounger and the buffet, and you leave whenever you want. Nothing on the schedule to miss.
  4. 04Cozumel Coral Reef Snorkeling by Glass Bottom Boat with GuideThe reef without getting in the water. A short run out of the downtown marina, and it works for anyone who is not swimming.

Cozumel sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest reef system on earth, and three stretches of it carry the island’s whole reputation. They make different days, and most boats sell them together.

Standing depth

El Cielo

A sandbar off the southwest tip where the Caribbean goes waist-deep and glass-clear over white sand, with starfish sitting on the bottom in plain view. There is no shore here — you arrive by boat and stand in the sea. Look for a trip that gives the sandbar a stop of its own rather than a ten-minute pause on the way home, and leave the starfish in the water: lifting them out for a photo kills them, and any decent captain will say so.

The wall

Palancar

Not one reef but a run of them — Gardens, Caves, Horseshoe, Bricks — where coral heads climb into the light before the shelf drops away into open blue. Snorkelers see the top of it and divers go over the edge. The current here runs south to north, so you drift and the boat follows you rather than fighting your way back to a mooring.

The far one

Columbia

Furthest south of the three, built of big coral pinnacles, and quieter simply because it is the longest run from town. Turtles are a regular sighting. Most boats pair it with El Cielo, which is the right order: the reef while the light is still high overhead, the sandbar afterwards.

What Cozumel actually sells: reef, sand and dust.

Snorkel boats, all-inclusive beach passes, off-road loops to the cavern and the ruins, and a park at each end of the island. Six shapes of day, and the best of each.

All-inclusive

A Cozumel beach club is a whole day, not a lunch.

Mr Sanchos, Paradise Beach, KUZÁ, Money Bar: a wristband buys the lounger, the buffet, the bar and usually the kayaks and the pool, for as long as you feel like staying. They line the calm west shore a short taxi from downtown, and what separates them is the crowd, not the coastline.

What it costs

A day on Cozumel starts at fourteen dollars.

Every tour on the island, sorted by what it actually costs. The cheap end is not the thin end here — park entry and shore snorkeling come in under the price of lunch.

Under $50
73 tours

Park entry, shore snorkeling, glass-bottom runs and the taco-and-tequila afternoons downtown.

$50–150
297 tours

The island’s standard day out: reef boats to Palancar and El Cielo, all-inclusive beach passes, ATV and jeep loops with lunch.

$150 and up
83 tours

Private boats, chartered jeeps and the small-group days you do not share with a coach party.

Before the ships

Cozumel was a pilgrimage long before it was a port.

Maya women crossed the channel by canoe to reach the sanctuary of Ix Chel at San Gervasio, and El Cedral — the oldest settlement on the island — still holds its festival every spring. The ruins themselves are modest; the story is not. Go with someone who tells it properly.

El Norte

When the north wind shuts the east side, the west shore keeps working.

Between November and March a norte can hold the port and cancel the small boats for a day or two. Every one of Cozumel’s reefs is on the sheltered west side, so the answer is usually a shorter run rather than a lost day: shore snorkeling, the parks, the cavern loop, a tasting downtown.
